What is Domestic Violence?

  

Domestic violence refers to any form of abusive behavior that occurs within a domestic or intimate relationship. Domestic violence includes sexual abuse, physical violence, and verbal threats. Physical abuse involves acts of physical aggression, such as hitting, kicking, or strangulation, leading to physical injury. Emotional and psychological abuse encompasses behaviors that degrade, belittle, or manipulate the victim's emotions and self-worth, causing profound psychological trauma. Sexual violence, another insidious form of abuse, involves coerced or non-consensual sexual acts within intimate relationships, inflicting deep emotional scars on the victims. These actions result in physical, emotional, and psychological harm to the individual. However, this specifically often affects women and Children throughout the nation. 

Statistics of Women and Children Domestic Violence

    

  • According to the Ballard relief; almost a quarter of US women have experienced domestic violence at least once in their lifetime, with less then 40% of women actively seeking help during the domestic violence. 


  • According to the CDC 1 in 4 women will excperince some form of sexual assault by their intimate partner during some point of their lifetime. With this, researchers have estimated that between 3.3 million and 10 million children are exposed to adult domestic violence each year. 


  • With 7.2 million child reports on child abuse and many more that have possibly not been reported according to the Child Maltreatment reports. This is an alarmingly high number throughout the nation and something must be done to stop it.

Why are Women afraid of seeking help?

  Unfortunately, there are many factors keeping Women from reaching out to help and breaking free from abusive situations. This includes fear of retaliation from the abuser, shame and a lack of support networks can discourage victims from getting out of the situation and seeking assistance.

Why is this a crisis in the United States?

  

This plays as a huge role to the increase of domestic violence. Women who are abused also often face pscycological and physical effects, ultimately affecting their well being, and with children; The New York Times reveals that about one-third of people who are abused in childhood will become abusers themselves. With this, it is important to stop the cycle of domestic violence and abuse now by reaching out.
