Drug abuse crisis

What is the drug abuse crisis?

  • The drug abuse crisis is the act of abusing substances, ultimately causing addiction. When one tries a drug it messes up their dopamine receptors(Chemical released in your brain that makes you happy). This is what makes you high and destroys a persons ability to perform.
  • When this happens, a person is not able to lead a normal life including socializing, having a family, and a career. This has spread rapidly throughout the United States as more people have died from drug overdoses then any other epidemic addiction in the history of the United States.

Why are Drugs so addictive?

  • When taking a drug, it produces a surge of dopamine to the basal ganglia. The basic ganglia are the part of your brain that gives your body happiness. When repeatedly taking addictive substances; your brain is trained to continue to release the dopamine, giving yourself artificial pleasure.
  • Your brain becomes addicted to this pleasure as it replaces it with things that would release natural dopamine such as exercise, reading or socializing with others. Causing addiction to the substance.

Why is it a crisis in the United States?

  • The continuous use of drug substances is extremely dangerous as drugs can lead to serious side effects ultimately changing a person altogether. When one becomes addicted to drugs, it messes up their dopamine receptors, making them totally dependent on the drug. This is what causes addiction and side effects upon a person. Common side effects include upset stomach, dry mouth, and drowsiness.
  •  However, side effects may commonly result to a person to be in a life-threatening condition, this includes; Death, hospitalization; disability or permanent damage; or exposure prior to conception or during pregnancy caused birth defect. This serves as a hugr crisis problem in the United states; as many Americans face the consequences of these drugs every single day.
